Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park

Thousands of years ago, much of the Bay of Roses and the Costa Brava was made up of marshes. Today, the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park is a refuge for numerous species of fauna and flora.

Depending on the season, you can see turtles, newts and migratory birds. The extensive park has small birdwatching stations, allowing birdwatchers to admire some of the more than 300 species spotted in the park. In spring, many white storks arrive to nest high up in the trees. So much nature is ideal for hiking. Visiting the small interpretation centre ‘El Cortalet’, you can obtain detailed information about the park’s trails. From an old rice drying tower, known as ‘Observatori Senillosa’, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the natural park.

Castelló d’Empúries

Centuries ago, during the Middle Ages, this small town was one of the most prosperous and important cities in the Empordà region. Its inhabitants donated large sums of money to the church to build a magnificent church using noble materials such as marble and alabaster. The Church of Santa María is impressive. To this day, the temple bears witness to the prosperity of its inhabitants.

But despite all their efforts, the church was never elevated to the rank of cathedral. Strolling through the old town centre, you can discover picturesque old buildings or visit an authentic 14th-century prison. In addition to the Parish Museum and the Museum of Medieval History, which once again illustrate the grandeur of this small place, the old flour mill is also worth a visit. The Ecomuseum-Farinera, which was in operation until the beginning of the last century, shows all the steps of production, from grain to flour.

Girona

Girona enchants with its narrow streets and old palaces in the historic center. The medieval atmosphere and the cathedral, well known to fans of the Game of Thrones series, are some of the city’s most popular attractions. In the Arab Baths, you can admire the remains of a medieval Roman-style bathhouse.

Walking along the ancient walls, you can enjoy a magnificent view over the rooftops of Girona, and the best place to admire the colorful houses on the banks of the Onyar is from one of the many bridges, such as the impressive iron bridge, Pont de les Peixateries Velles, designed by the architect Eiffel. A visit to Girona’s historical museums is highly recommended.

Ruinas d’Empúries

More than 2,000 years ago, Greek settlers landed on the Costa Brava, where the ruins of Empúries are today. They established their first settlement and traded with the native Iberians. When the Romans began to expand their empire to the Iberian Peninsula, the Iberians disappeared, and the Greek colony became a Roman colony.

The museum, located in the middle of the archaeological site, tells the story of this charming place. During a walk overlooking the sea, you can discover where the theater, temples, and Roman houses once stood. In addition to the archaeological finds, the museum presents a short video explaining the evolution of the settlement.

excursiones-lescala

L’Escala

L’Escala is a charming fishing village that has maintained its authentic character to this day. While sailboats and diving boats bob on the waves, fishing boats still go out to sea day after day to sell fresh fish at the fish market.

L’Escala’s culinary specialty is anchovies in oil, which can be sampled in every restaurant. Numerous beautiful coves, such as Cala Montgó, invite you to take a stroll overlooking the sea or enjoy a relaxing day at the beach.

Cadaqués

To reach Cadaqués, a single road winds its way through numerous curves, offering spectacular views of the sea until the picturesque village finally comes into view. Located in the heart of the Cap de Creus Natural Park, Cadaqués is situated on the easternmost part of the peninsula. Its small white houses nestled in steep streets, the beauty of the surroundings and an atmosphere that combines culture and wild nature make up the magic of this village.

Surrounded by incredible landscapes, it became famous in the 1970s thanks to the surrealist painter Salvador Dalí, who lived in the bay of Portlligat, where his house-museum is located today. The eccentric artist’s extravagance attracted many international celebrities and artists who were seduced by the bohemian atmosphere of Cadaqués. These fantastic landscapes inspired Dalí, who captured them in his paintings.

About 4 km from Tossa de Mar is Cala Pola Beach. It is a coarse sand beach nestled between the rocky cliffs characteristic of the Costa Brava. Protected from the Tramontana, the cold wind that blows from the north, it offers a uniquely peaceful setting.

The only access is via Camping Cala Pola or by walking along the coastal path, the Camí de Ronda. This cove is ideal for enjoying the beautiful surroundings, swimming and sunbathing in a spectacular natural landscape and an intimate atmosphere. Tamariu Beach

Along with Llafranc and Calella, Tamariu Beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Palafrugell. The name of the cove comes from the tamarisk, a shrub that was once abundant in this area. Although somewhat remote from Palafrugell, Tamariu offers an urban beach atmosphere, with houses and restaurants. The water is crystal clear and invites you to swim among the rocks that separate Tamariu from Cala Aigua Dolça and Platja dels Liris.

Tamariu Beach has fine sand and is about 220 metres long and 40 metres wide. While fishermen leave some boats on the sand during the winter, in summer all boats must anchor in the waters off the coast. Those who do not have a boat or kayak and do not want to walk can easily access the beach by car, although in July and August the Tamariu beach car park fills up quickly.

Castell Beach

At the foot of Cap Roig lies Castell Beach, surrounded by natural beauty. Thanks to protests by the residents of Palamós, this area was saved from the construction of private villas. Today, we can enjoy the beauty of this wide sandy beach, which stretches for about 50 metres in length and 300 metres in width between Cala S’Alguer and the small coves of Cap Roig.

The name comes from the ruins of an ancient Iberian castle found near the beach, following the Camino de Ronda north towards Palafrugell. On both sides of the beach, where small pine forests provide shade in the summer months, you can enjoy beautiful views of the coastal landscape. Although the beach is located outside urban areas, it has a large car park for access by car.

About 165 metres up the hill that separates Llafranc and Tamariu, there is an old watchtower next to the San Sebastián lighthouse, offering spectacular views. To the south of Llafranc beach, there is a beautiful path that leads to Calella de Palafrugell and Cap Roig, from where you can enjoy views of the most beautiful coves on the Costa Brava.

Pals Beach

Pals Beach, with its 2.4 km length, is one of the best beaches on the Costa Brava for nature lovers. The beach is divided into two parts: the northern part, called Platja del Grau, is practically untouched and is located in a landscape of protected dunes in the surroundings of the Gola del Ter. The southern part is called Platja Gran. There you will find restaurants and services.

Both parts of Pals Beach have fine sand and walkways that facilitate access to the beach for people with reduced mobility.
